Description

While the displays inside a national historical site are always fascinating and educational, at a site like Fort Monroe the view out through the windows can give you an even better feel for what life was like at the site during its active period. I can imagine from the view in this photo, taken March 6, 2025, soldiers hauling ammo and supplies from the casemates, officers coming to check on prisoners held there, or perhaps wives of officers taking a walk for some fresh air. For enlisted men or prisoners living in the casemates, a view like this certainly would have relieved the drabness of their quarters, in any season.
